What the Arch Actually Does, and What Fallen Arches Really Means

The arch is not one structure and it is not simply a shape. It is a mechanism that changes stiffness during every single step.

Most people picture the arch as a fixed curve, a bit like the underside of a bridge, and picture a flat foot as one where the curve has given way.

The reality is more interesting, and it explains why some people with visibly flat feet have no trouble at all whilst others with textbook arches are in constant discomfort.

There is more than one arch

The foot has a long arch running along the inside, a lower one along the outside, and a transverse arch running across the width. They work together rather than separately.

Holding them up is a combination of things: the wedge shape of the bones themselves, the ligaments tying them, a thick band of tissue running along the sole from heel to toes, and the muscles and tendons of the foot and lower leg.

That is a lot of redundancy. It also means arch problems can originate in several different structures, which is why they are not all the same problem.

The arch changes stiffness on purpose

Here is the part that is genuinely clever, and the part most people have never been told.

The foot needs to do two contradictory jobs within a single step. When it lands, it should be relatively soft and mobile, so it can adapt to the ground and absorb impact. When it pushes off, it should be relatively rigid, so it can act as a lever and transmit force.

It manages both by changing its own stiffness. As you rise onto your toes at the end of a step, the toes extend, which winds the band of tissue along the sole tighter around the joints, and the arch lifts and locks. Release, and it softens again.

The foot is not supposed to be stiff or flexible. It is supposed to alternate, and it does that many thousands of times a day.

Which reframes "fallen arches"

Flat feet are common, and a great many people with them have no symptoms whatsoever and never will. Being flat footed is a variation, not automatically a fault.

What matters more than the height of the arch when standing is whether the foot can still do the alternating job. A flexible flat foot that forms an arch when the person rises onto their toes is behaving quite differently from a rigid one that never changes shape.

That distinction is a clinical assessment, not something to judge from a photograph, and it is one of several reasons why the internet's confident advice about arch height is worth ignoring.

What this means practically

If your feet are comfortable, arch height is not a problem waiting to happen. Plenty of people spend entire careers on flat feet without incident.

If your feet are not comfortable, the useful question is not how high the arch looks but what changes the symptoms: time of day, surface, footwear, how long you have been standing, whether it eases with rest.

That information is what a GP or podiatrist actually works from, and it is far more useful than a verdict on the shape of your foot at rest.

When to get it looked at

Pain that does not settle with rest. Pain concentrated in one foot. A foot that has visibly changed shape over months. Numbness, tingling or weakness. Any foot concern in someone with diabetes.

All of those want a professional opinion rather than a self diagnosis, because the shape of the arch is only one part of a much longer answer.
