Firm or Cushioned Support: The Trade Off Nobody Explains
Soft feels better in the shop. Firm feels better at hour ten. The reason is a property of the material rather than a matter of preference.

Stand in a shop, press two insoles with your thumb, and the softer one wins every time. Wear both through a twelve hour shift and the result frequently reverses.
That is not a trick of perception. It follows from what the materials do under sustained load.
Why very soft fails late
Cushioning works by compressing. Material deforms, absorbs energy, and returns to shape.
The limit is that a material can only absorb whilst it still has somewhere to compress into. Once it has fully bottomed out under load, it stops absorbing anything and you are effectively standing on whatever is underneath it.
A very soft insole reaches that point sooner, which is why it feels wonderful for an hour and unremarkable by mid shift. It also tends to compress permanently faster, so the useful life is shorter.
Why very firm fails differently
A rigid support holds its shape indefinitely and provides genuine structure. The cost is comfort at the interface: hard material against the sole of the foot, with pressure concentrated wherever the shape does not match your foot exactly.
This is where the break in period comes from, and it is also why a proportion of people who buy rigid orthotic style inserts abandon them within a fortnight. If it is uncomfortable enough that it stays in the drawer, its structural excellence is irrelevant.
The best insole is not the most supportive one. It is the most supportive one you will still be wearing in a month.
What the sensible middle looks like
Most well designed products aim for a structured element that holds shape combined with a softer layer at the surface that manages comfort.
That is not a compromise in the pejorative sense. It reflects the fact that the two jobs are genuinely separate: structure resists deformation, cushioning absorbs impact, and asking one material to do both means doing neither well.
When you press an insole in a shop, you are testing the top layer. You are not testing whether anything underneath holds its shape, which is the part that determines how it performs at hour ten.
Who each one suits
Firmer structure tends to suit people whose complaint is fatigue and aching that builds through a long day, particularly along the arch.
Softer cushioning tends to suit people whose complaint is impact and soreness underfoot, especially on very hard flooring.
Someone who has been advised by a podiatrist should follow that advice. A prescribed device is addressing something specific and a shop bought alternative is not equivalent.
The test that actually matters
Not how it feels when you press it. How it feels at the end of the longest day you regularly work.
Which is why any product worth considering should have a returns window long enough to find that out, and why a fortnight of real use tells you more than any amount of comparison in a shop.
